ART AS A WORKING PARTY
- Community Art from the Meadows of Niva

Abstract

In my thesis I will describe and analyse three different art happenings based on the environment. The first one was realised in summer 2001 in the community of Niva in Pyhäselkä. The second one “Heinämammutti” took place in summer 2002 in the field of the Honkavaara traditional yard. And the last one “Nivan Niityt” was located at the courtyard of the Joensuu Art Museum. My role was to participate in the Meadows of Niva and community art project as an artist. I was also part of a working party in that project.

I will observe these art happenings from the point of view of community art. As a part of my thesis, I will seek to answer question what made the happenings of the Meadows of Niva community art.

By describing the working methods and my feelings, I attempt to clarify my role in that particular art happenings. I will be asking myself whether the working party and the cultural event amongst the people can be taken as community art. Moreover, does it really matter what we call them

- yhteisötaidetta Nivan niityiltä

Tiivistelmä

Opinnäytetyössäni kuvaan ja analysoin kolmea ympäristöön sijoittuvaa taidetapahtu­maa. Ensimmäinen taidetapahtuma oli kesällä 2001 Pyhäselän Nivan kylässä. Kesällä 2002 oli toinen Heinämammutti Honkavaaran perinnepihan pellolla ja kolmas Nivan Niityt Joensuussa taidemuseon pihalla.
Toimin Nivan niityt ja yhteisötaideprojektissa taiteilija-talkootyöläisenä.

Tarkastelen tapahtumia yhteisö- ja ympäristösidonnaisuuden näkökulmasta. Etsin vas­tausta kysymykseen mikä Nivan niittyjen tapahtumista tekee yhteisötaidetta.

Kuvaamalla työskentelyäni ja kokemuksiani pyrin selvittämään ja ymmärtämään mikä oli taiteilija roolini kyseissä taidetapahtumissa. Loppujen lopuksi kysyn, ovatko kyläläisten yhteinen kulttuuritoiminta ja perinteiset talkoot yhteisötaidetta ja onko sillä miksi niitä nimittää lopputuloksen kannalta merkitystä.

Opinnäytetyössäni ilmaisuja community art ja new genre public art käytän merkitse­mään yhteisötaidetta.
